We are asking everyone to please encrypt all research data, regardless of whether it includes protected health information or not. There are many ways to do this, but a free and relatively easy one is to go to http://www.truecrypt.org This does the job to the federal government's approved standards. This is a departmental standard, not a hospital one, but it is good practice and will keep everyone out of trouble in the event of a USB drive or computer being stolen.
